The documentary featuring Ina May and The Farm Midwives is being shown right here in Harrisonburg!

JMU is hosting the movie at Court Square Theater in downtown Harrisonburg on March 21.

This documentary "tells the story of counterculture heroine Ina May Gaskin and her friends, who began delivering each other’s babies in 1970.

The women taught themselves midwifery from the ground up, and, with their families, founded an entirely communal, agricultural society called The Farm. They grew their own food, built their own houses, published their own books, and, as word of their social experiment spread, created a model of care for women and babies that changed a generation’s approach to childbirth.

Ten years ago, I married the love of my life and shortly thereafter, we moved to South America together to begin an exciting adventure as Peace Crops volunteers in Paraguay. Upon learning that we had been married for only 6 months, friends and neighbors wrould often remark that we had come to Paraguay for our "luna de miel", our honeymoon. It was a beautiful and gritty experiance and one that I am thankful to have shared with my husband. When we retrurned from South America, we both began teaching here in Harrisonburg. I taught for 3 years at Waterman Elementary School.

When my son Mateo was born, 5 years ago, I finished the school year and have taken a break from teaching to be with him and my other son Leo. Leo joined our family 2 years ago and holds the special honor of being the first baby born at Brookhaven!

These days, our explorations are with our little boys and are likely to include bicycles, sticks, and trips to the arboretum. What a rich life we live! We are so thankful to be a part of a supportive and loving church community in Harrisonburg, where we attend Early Church.

This past July, My husband and I marked 10 years of marriage with a celebratory adventure to Costa Rica. We came home with the best souvenir imaginable, a baby girl in the womb! I am hoping to bring her into the world the same way her brothers entered this world, gently into warm water. I plan to give birth at Brookhaven.
